What is Janumet?
Janumet is a prescription-only medicine developed by Merck. Consisting of both sitagliptin and metformin HCI as its active ingredients, Janumet is a combination drug designed to treat diabetes mellitus. Chemically, sitagliptin belongs to a class of drugs known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 enzyme inhibitors. Metformin, on the other hand, is a type of biguanide. Through the inhibition of DPP-4 enzymes, Janumet prevents incretin from being inactivated. This helps to increase its duration of action. At the same time, Janumet effectively lowers both postprandial and basal plasma glucose, leading to an enhanced glucose tolerance.
What is it used for?
Part of a bigger treatment plan, Janumet is typically used in conjunction with diet, exercise or other non-pharmacological interventions. To ensure treatment success, it is important that patients use this drug exactly as directed (including following any lifestyle recommendations made by the doctor). Janumet is not recommended for patients who have type 1 diabetes (or diabetic ketoacidosis). In addition, it is not advisable to use this drug if you have a history of pancreatitis. While using Janumet, they may have a higher risk of developing the disease. The safety and efficacy of Janumet in pediatrics have yet to be established. Therefore, the use of Janumet should be avoided in patients under 18 years old.
