What is Glyxambi?
Glyxambi is a combination medication that helps to regulate blood sugar levels. It consists of the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) enzyme inhibitor linagliptin, which increases insulin levels in the body during times of high blood sugar levels such as after a meal and decreases the quantity of glucose produced by the body, and empagliflozin, and a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor, which eliminates sugar through urinary excretion by lowering reabsorption of kidney-filtered glucose. This oral medication is supplied in the form of tablets containing 25mg empagliflozin and 5mg linagliptin.
What is Glyxambi used for?
Glyxambi should be taken to help improve high blood sugar levels associated with type 2 diabetes. The medication should be administered along with diet and exercise to improve blood glucose levels in adults. This medication cannot be used to treat type 1 diabetes. Some doctors also prescribe Glyxambi to decrease the risk of death from a cardiovascular event (e.g. stroke, heart failure or heart attack). The recommended dosage of Glyxambi is 10mg empagliflozin/5mg linagliptin once daily in the morning, taken without regard to food; however, your doctor may increase the dose to 25mg empagliflozin/5mg linagliptin once daily.
Why use Glyxambi?
Glyxambi may be prescribed if the patient responds well to linagliptin and empagliflozin and can benefit from the lowered cost and convenience of taking a combination of the two medications in one single pill.Click to read more Click to read less
