What is Avandamet 4mg/500mg?
Avandamet 4mg/500mg is an oral antidiabetic medication made of 4mg of rosiglitazone maleate and 500mg of metformin hydrochloride. Rosiglitazone, which a part of the thiazolidinedione drug class, helps to improve the body’s sensitivity to insulin to enable cells to absorb more glucose. On the contrary, metformin is a biguanide, which works by reducing the production and absorption of glucose in the liver and intestine. Metformin also increases the peripheral uptake and utilization of glucose. The synergistic actions of these two antidiabetic agents help to reduce high blood sugar levels.
What is Avandamet 4mg/500mg used for?
Avandamet is administered to regulate the glycemic control of patients with type 2 diabetes Mellitus. Type 2 diabetic patients who did not attain adequate glycemic control or are hypersensitive to other oral antidiabetic drugs (OADs) may also be prescribed Avandamet. While the exact dosage of this drug varies on an individual basis, diabetic management using Avandamet should be commenced with the lowest recommended dose of rosiglitazone component. Any dose adjustments will be done gradually with careful monitoring. The maximum daily dose is capped at 8mg of rosiglitazone and 2000mg of metformin. Patients should take this medicine twice daily with food.
