What is Avandamet 2mg/1000mg?
Avandamet 2mg/1000mg is an oral antidiabetic drug (OAD) that is indicated for type 2 diabetic patients who are unable to control their elevated blood glucose levels using other antihyperglycemic agents. This medication is made of two important ingredients: 2mg of rosiglitazone maleate and 1000mg of metformin hydrochloride. Rosiglitazone and metformin are categorized under thiazolidinedione and biguanide drug classes, respectively. Together, they help to increase insulin sensitivity for enhanced cellular uptake and utilization of glucose. Metformin also lowers the elevated blood glucose level by reducing the hepatic output of glucose and intestinal absorption of glucose.
What is Avandamet 2mg/1000mg used for?
Avandamet is prescribed as an adjunct therapy alongside diet control and adequate exercise. This medication helps to reduce elevated blood glucose levels. Patients who were previously on rosiglitazone and metformin may be switched to Avandamet, as long as the dose of each component is maintained. Usually, the initial treatment consists of the lowest dose and is increased based on the patient’s response. The maximum daily dosage is 8mg of rosiglitazone and 2000mg of metformin. This medication should be administered twice daily with food. This medication is not suitable for the treatment of type 1 diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis.
