Nesina is an oral antidiabetic prescription medication that is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Its main ingredient is alogliptin which belongs to a class of drug known as dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor. Nesina comes in 6.25mg tablets, 12.5mg tablets, and 25mg tablets.
What is Nesina 6.25 mg used for?
Nesina is only indicated for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus aged 18 years old and above. It is meant to be used along with proper diet and exercise. Insulin and oral antidiabetic medications such as sulfonylureas complement Nesina to better control blood sugar levels, but their doses should be lowered in view of a higher risk of developing hypoglycemia.
Why use Nesina 6.25 mg?
Nesina is one of the few drugs capable of reducing glucagon release (hormone that increases blood sugar levels) while increasing insulin release. It also reduces post-meal and fasting sugar levels much more when blood sugar levels are high. Furthermore, it is a convenient oral drug usually taken at 25mg per day with or without food.
Various trials involved 14,053 subjects to investigate the use of Nesina in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The results showed that with any treatment regime (i.e. with oral antidiabetic medications or insulin), HbA1C readings averaged out to be 0.6% lower when combined with Nesina. Lipid levels (e.g. bad cholesterol) was also shown to be lower when treatment consisted Nesina.Click to read more Click to read less
