What is Nesina (Alogliptin) 12.5mg?
Nesina is an antidiabetic prescription medication manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals that is meant to be taken orally in tablet form. It contains an active ingredient known as alogliptin, which is a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor. This oral medication is meant to be used by individuals who need to manage their blood sugar levels.
What is it used for?
Nesina is used for patients aged 18 years and older with type 2 diabetes mellitus alongside adequate exercise and appropriate dietary changes. Nesina can be taken with insulin and oral antidiabetic medications such as sulfonylureas to optimally lower blood sugar levels but their doses should be lower as the risk for hypoglycemia is higher.
Why use this drug?
Nesina reduces glucagon release but increasing insulin production. It also reduces post-meal and fasting sugar levels in a sugar-dependent manner. It can be conveniently taken 25mg once a day with or without food.
Multiple studies examining a total of 14,053 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus using Nesina alone or in combination with other antidiabetic medications found that HbA1C readings were 0.6% lower with treatment therapies that included Nesina compared to treatment therapies without. Additionally, the level of bad cholesterol was also shown to be lower with Nesina.
