What is the Glucagon Emergency Kit?
As the name suggests, the Glucagon Emergency Kit is an emergency medicine in cases of hypoglycemia. It is indicated as an emergency treatment for hypoglycemia (low blood glucose levels) in insulin-treated diabetic patients. The active ingredient present in this medicine is 1mg of glucagon. In the human body, glucagon—a type of peptide hormone—is released from the pancreatic alpha cells and works opposite to insulin by converting stored glycogen into glucose for energy. It also helps stabilize blood glucose levels.
What is it used for?
Diabetic patients on insulin therapy who experience hypoglycemic episodes must be treated immediately to prevent severe health complications like disorientation, seizures, unconsciousness, and even coma. The Glucagon Emergency Kit is administered via subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Once injected, the medication will promote the breakdown of glycogen into glucose in order to raise the blood glucose level.
Dosage
The recommend dose for adults and children who weigh more than 20kg (44lbs) is 1mg. Patients who weigh less than 20kg (44lbs) is 0.5mg. The onset of action is usually within 10 to 15 minutes. Patients who do not respond to this emergency medicine must be sent to the hospital for immediate medical attention. Each Glucagon Emergency Kit comes with one prefilled vial of lyophilized glucagon powder and one Hyporet prefilled with the diluting solution. The glucagon powder must be reconstituted with the diluting solution provided before administration.
Why use this kit?
This kit should be used in cases of severe hypoglycemia if patients are not able to drink or eat something containing glucose. The use of this kit can increase blood sugar levels to avoid more severe medical conditions caused by hypoglycemia.
