What is Tresiba?
Tresiba is the trade name of insulin degludec, a long-acting insulin administered to provide control of fasting blood sugar levels. Insulin therapy is essential for treating patients with diabetes who are not able to produce enough insulin on their own to properly normalize their blood glucose levels.
Insulin degludec mimics the pharmacokinetic profile of endogenous insulin and is released in a low, continuous dose throughout the day. Each insulin pen (FlexTouch) contains 3 ml of a 200 unit/ml solution. One carton contains 5 units of Tresiba.
What is it used for?
Tresiba may be used in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes and certain cases of Type 2 diabetes. This insulin is typically coupled with the use of another, rapid-acting type of insulin in what is known as a bolus-basal regimen. This insulin is not meant for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.
Why use Tresiba?
Tresiba has an ultra-long activity period of up to 42 hours, allowing the patient greater flexibility when it comes to timing their doses. This basal insulin also has a lowered risk of hypoglycemia occurrences, compared to other long-acting insulins.
It is provided in an easy-to operate insulin delivery system that has been shown to be more accurate in dosing than other insulin pens.
