What is Invokana (Canagliflozin) 300mg?
Invokana 300mg is part of a new class of oral antihyperglycemic agents. This medication is made of 300mg of canagliflozin (as hemihydrate), which belongs in a group of medications known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) is a major sodium-dependent glucose transport protein involved in reabsorbing glucose that has been filtered in the kidney.
What is it used for?
Type 2 diabetic patients who do not present adequate glycemic control when treated with metformin or other oral antidiabetic agents can use Invokana 300 instead. It helps to regulate blood glucose levels by inhibiting the action of SGLT2 transport proteins, resulting in reduced reabsorption of filtered glucose and a lowered renal threshold for glucose. Hence, excessive glucose is excreted via urine and blood glucose levels are reduced and regulated. The recommended initial dose is 100mg, taken once daily with or without food. Patients who can tolerate this dosage but need better glycemic control can have their dosage increased to Invokana 300mg, taken once daily with or without food. Patients over 75 years of age, or those with cardiovascular disease, must be monitored carefully prior to Invokana administration. As well, when this medication is used concomitantly with insulin or an insulin secretagogue (e.g., sulfonylureas), a lower dose of insulin or insulin secretagogue should be prescribed to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia.
Why use this medication?
Use this medication as an adjunct therapy to diet control and exercise to help manage type 2 diabetes.
