What is Avandia?
Avandia is a hypoglycemic drug that contains rosiglitazone as its active ingredient. Part of the thiazolidinedione family, rosiglitazone (formulated as maleate) is not functionally related to other classes of antidiabetic medicines (e.g. alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, biguanides and sulfonylureas). It is able to improve sensitivity to insulin, helping diabetic patients to control their blood glucose levels. Avandia comes in tablet form and is available in different dosage strengths. This prescription medication is developed by the London-based GlaxoSmithKline.
What is it used for?
Avandia is used for improving glycemic control in type 2 diabetic adults. Avandia is often used concomitantly with non-pharmacological treatments (such as diet and exercise). Avandia is not designed to treat type I diabetes mellitus or diabetic ketoacidosis. Using Avandia concurrently with insulin may lead to an increased risk of serious cardiovascular conditions. Patients who are not experiencing adequate relief from non-pharmacologic treatments can include Avandia in their treatment plan to help control blood sugar levels.
Why use Avandia?
Avandia is a popular treatment for adult patients who suffer from type II diabetes. It significantly improves blood glucose control while decreasing circulating insulin levels at the same time. Taking this medication can help you control your blood sugar levels.
