Humalog Insulin Lispro Injection Sites Instructions

Humalog Insulin Lispro Injection Sites Instructions

What is Humalog?

Humalog is an injectable medication containing human insulin analogue. Designed to act rapidly, it helps to control blood glucose levels in adult and pediatric patients with diabetes. This diabetes medication can be injected into the vein or under the skin.

How to inject Humalog

Prior to use, check the insulin labels and inspect the solution. Do not use the injectable solution if appears cloudy and make sure that it is particulate-free. When using a continuous subcutaneous infusion pump to administer Humalog U-100, do not mix with any other insulins. If you are using Humalog U-200, do not transfer the content in the KwikPen to a syringe. Similarly, U-200 should not be mixed with any insulins.

Humalog injections should be given right after a meal (or 15 minutes before eating). After injecting Humalog, discard used syringes and needles. Do not reuse the syringe and needle, as they are intended for one-time use only. Humalog should be used within 28 days after opening.

Is there a difference when injecting Humalog U-100 vs Humalog U-200?

Keep in mind that Humalog U-200 is not intended for intravenous (IV) administration. Do not use an insulin pump (continuous subcutaneous infusion pump) to administer U-200. As a general rule, U-100 can be administered via an insulin pump or intravenous/subcutaneous injections. U-200, on the other hand, should only be injected subcutaneously. U-100 should only be injected intravenously under close medical supervision.

For subcutaneous administration, inject into the buttocks, upper arm, thigh or abdominal wall. The injection sites should be rotated within the same area in order to prevent lipodystrophy. Similarly, the infusion set insertion site and infusion sets should be changed every 3 days.

You should not perform a dose conversion when using Humalog injections. The number of units to be administered is shown on the dose window, therefore no dose conversion is required.

Follow these Humalog injection instructions to ensure safety and optimal treatment outcomes. Use this injection exactly as instructed. As with all drugs, read the product insert thoroughly before using the injectable. Ask your doctor if you are not sure how to use Humalog.
