Diabetics and Exercise
Not only is exercising good for your overall health and well being, it will also help lower your blood sugar levels.
Before exercising you should check your blood glucose level. If it is low, have a snack and follow the “15/15” rule (15 grams of carbs and check glucose levels again in 15 minutes). A quick snack could consist of a handful of nuts, berry smoothie, or a bowl of quinoa.
Having a fast-acting snack handy while working out is a good precaution against hypoglycaemia. Many drugstores carry fast-acting glucose snacks that are small enough to take with you while working out.
The following is a list of snacks that will put glucose into your bloodstream in about 5 minutes.
- Gum Drops
- Hard Candy
- Fat-free milk
Just remember to exercise safely and drink lots of water.
